Athletics Kenya to select 50 athletes for Africa Under 18/20 in Lusaka

Athletics Kenya will select 50 athletes that will represent the country during the African Under20/18 championships that will be held in Lusaka, Zambia.

The championships set start on 29th April to May 3rd, Kenya is expected to send 50 athletes in all categories.

In a statement signed by Athletics Kenya Executive member and director Youth Development Baranaba Korir, the team will have strong representation  in both the sprints, middle, and long distance races for the four-day championship

Korir expressed confidence that Team Kenya will do the country proud in the event.

To that effect,  Athletics Kenya will conduct trials on Friday and Saturday at Nyayo Stadium to select a formidable squad

The 1st Edition of this championship was held in 2019 at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast where Kenya finished 2nd overall behind South Africa with a total of 44 medals; 17 Golds, 16 Silver and 11 Bronze medals.

On the other hand, Kenya won the U18 title at the same championships.

In terms of eligibility athletes aged 18 athlete aged 16 or 17 years on December 31st of the year of competition (Born 2006 or 2007) will be allowed to compete in this age group.

For the athletss aged 20 any athlete aged 18 or 19 years on December 31st of the year of competition (Born 2004 or 2005) will be allowed to compete in this age group.

Athletes must meet the set standards as per the qualifying standards set under the Confederation of Africa Athletics technical regulations.

The maximum number of events in which an U-18 athlete may compete are two (2) individual events plus one relay.

Athletes in the under-18 category will will compete in the 100,  200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000m, 10, 000m and other races while athletes in the under 20 category will do battle in the 5000, 10000m 110 metre hurdles walk and field events.
