As race to make the national team for Olympic games set for Tokyo next year, top seed Badminton players will be chasing for the title at the 6th edition of Eldoret Grand Uasin Gishu Badminton Open tournament to be hosted at Eldoret Gulab Lochab.
Event organiser Naomi Kemunto and Mwanzo Zury Youth Group said the tournament has attracted Uganda and Tanzania players in the two day event that kicks off on Saturday 23rd to Sunday 24th.
Kemunto, the former Kenya One said that some players who competed at the All Africa Games in Morocco will be making their way to Eldoret for the championships.
Among players who competed for Kenya in Morocco are Mercy Joseph, John Wanyoike and Sharon Juma.
The Badminton Kenya official said the tournament will be part of the preparations for 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
“We want to run this tournament successfully as this is part of nurturing both local and national players, who will anchor the national team in major international tournaments,” said Kemunto.
Kemunto said Joseph and others have been playing well across the country and they will be giving a tough challenge to other players.
“We are preparing the players for national duties. From such tournaments we will select the best players to play for the country at 2020 Olympic Games,” added Kemunto.
