Barani High School defeated Malindi A to win the 5-a-side Malindi Beach Rugby age-group title on Saturday evening.
The champions were 2-1 winners during the finals played at the Buntwani Waterfront Park in Malindi, Kilifi County.
Junior Katama scored first for the champions but Malindi A responded quickly with a try from Edward Fondo to level but Maurice Nyundo waited and scored in the last minute to seal the victory.
The Protus Omuhaya coached side remained unbeaten for the whole tournament to become the champions.
To reach the finals, the champions were 2-1 winners against Gede High School while Malindi A beat compatriots Malindi B to sail to the finals.
Barani started off on a good note, by beating Miritini Sailors 1-0, followed by a 4-2 beating of Marafa, played to a one-all draw against Malindi B to qualify for the semifinals.
Champions head coach Omuhaya said it was a motivation for the boys to aim higher. “We want this school to be the hub of rugby excellence. I am happy that they did what we had discussed before coming for this tournament,” said Omuhaya.
