Beth Muthon was the surprise winner of the 28th edition of Marathon de La Rochelle held on Sunday in France.
The Kenyan marathon defeated marathon best and country-mate Philes Ongori to carry the title at 2:40.08 that she got early this year at Caen Marathon in France.
The 28 year-old battled for honors with her fellow country-mate Philes Ongori and Corrine Herbreteau from France.
Ongori was the race favorite as she came on paper with a personal best of 2:24.20 that she got in 2011at the Rotterdam Marathon. Ongori ran 2:23.22 in Boston Marathon.
Muthoni dropped Ongori at the final stages of the race to run home with the title in anew personal best of 2:40.08.
The experienced Ongori was forced to take second place in 2:41.02 with Herbreteau closing the first three podium finishes in 2:42.46.
