Geoffrey Birgen and Doreen Chemutai won the Dakar marathon titles ran yesterday in Dakar, Senegal.
The Kenyans won by big margins against their opponents in a race that attracted many international athletes on the course.
Birgen won the men’s race in 2:16.46 beating fellow Kenyan Douglas Kipsanai Chebii to second in 2:20.39 and Luke Kibet coming third in 2:23.50 for Kenyan podium sweep.
Ugandan Chemutai won the women’s title in 2:46.48 after beating Ethiopian Tsegaw Selamawit getnet to second in 2:48.18 and Senegalese Mbaye Madjiguene was third in 3:39.17.
In the half marathon, it was an all Kenyan affair as Daniel Kemoi leading Ugandan Moses Kibet and Moroccan Mohcin outalla.
Kemoi won in 64:20, Kibet followed in 64:43 Outalla third in 66:55.
In women half marathon, Sharon Chelimo was the victor in 73:15 beating Moroccan Fatiha Asmid to second in 74:39 and Kenyan Careen Mwetich third timing 77:26.
