Bondo in Siaya County will play host to the last World English Scrabble Players Association Championships (WESPAC) and East, Central and Southern Africa Scrabble Championships (ECASA) set for this weekend.
Scrabble Kenya will be using the last event to pick Word Warriors, the national Scrabble Kenya team to represent the country in both WESPAC and ECASA championships that will be staged in Las Vegas and Nairobi in August and April Respectively.
Series leader Allan Oyende will team up with host player Manase Otieno in the tournament where six top players after the countrywide Grand Prix events that started in Nyahururu, Nairobi, Standard Chartered, Kitui and now in Bondo will earn an automatic ticket to WESPAC while top 25 will represent the country at ECASA.
“We are ready to host the event and this being the last qualifiers, we shall have many players who will be seeking to consolidate points for the two international events,” said Otieno.
He added that they have already bought trophies, paid for the facilities and other logistics that are needed to successfully host an event
“Everything is ready because we don’t like last minute rush. Because we are hosting a big number of about 80 players, we had to ensure that we get ourselves ready on time,” he said.
Oyende, who has already qualified for the virtue that he has won three out of four meetings, is optimistic that he will be in a position to add more points in Bondo.
“Yes, I have already qualified for both events but I have to travel to Bondo and play more games as part of my training and sharpening my skills ahead of the two important games,” said Oyende.
The two-day event will start on Saturday 4th to Sunday 5th.
