Brigid Kosgei: London marathon queen returns

Newly crowned London marathon champion Brogid Kosgei returned home today with song and dance.

The athlete who trains in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet county said that she achieved what she wanted – best time- in London on Sunday.

The two time Amsterdam marathon champion clocked 2:18:20 as her new personal best after eding out defending champion Vivian Cheruiyot who came second in 2:20:14 as Ethiopia’s Roza Dereje completed the podium by clocking 2:20:51 before Berlin Marathon champion Gladys Cherono coming in 4th in 2:20:52 as three time champion and reigning New York Marathon champion Mary Keitany came 5th timing 2:20:58.

“I wanted good time in London which I achieved though am still targeting to lower the world record and that’s my next target,” said Kosgei.

The reigning Chicago marathon champion said: “after increasing my speed at 35km,  I saw the win awaiting me but I had to deal with Cheruiyot, which I did very well.”

After arriving from London, Kosgei met with Sports cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed who witnessed the race in London were earlier in the morning received by Athletics Kenya president Gen. Jack Tuwei and Barnabas Korir at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
