Nyanza Captain Thomas Odongo has predicted a tough encounter over the weekend at the Nyanza Open, as Kenya Amateur Golf Championships series enters homestretch this weekend.
Popularly known as the Hippo Pot, the Captain said that the three day tournament on par 72 golf club in the lakeside City Kisumu.
The tournament, which was elevated from a 36 hole to 54, the captain said it would give opportunities to golfers a chance to redeem themselves.
“When we used to play in 36 holes, many golfers, who had played badly in the first day did not have a chance to redeem their swing but with 36 where the cut will be made on Saturday, the round one player with bad scores will redeem on the second round and probably make the cut for Sunday’s final round,” said Odongo.
The tournament, tees off this morning, has attract over 80 golfers according to Odongo according to the early entries recorded.
“With the 80 golfers at the Friday tee off on Friday, 36 will make the cut on Saturday and will be in the prize brackets,” he said.
He added that the 54-hole event will be more competitive, which is also a World Amateur Rankings.
In 2022, Kenya Railways player John Lejirma edged out Golf Park’s Sammy Mulama for the title when he fired +7 147 for the title while Dennis Maara from Limuru beat Kenya Railway’s Joseph Gathumbi for the title in 2021.
“With all these stars descending to Nyanza, it will be one of the most tough encounter and exciting considering the good weather and the level of players who be battling for the title,” added Odongo.
