Former Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) champions Vihiga Queens will have to wait further before competing at the Caf Champions League.
This is because CAF has postponed the Women’s Champions League qualifiers for the Cecafa Zonal.
The championships that were set to kick-off this Saturday in Nairobi to August 1st has been moved to a later date.
“We’ve decided to postpone the tournament to an unknown date due to lack of funds to host it. It requires a huge amount of money to accommodate all nine participating teams as well as officials. The move was in conjunction with CAF whom they will have to talk to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to agree on the new date.”
Hosts Vihiga Queens were set to kick off the campaign against FAD Club of Djibouti in Pool ‘C’ on Saturday. The other opponent Scandinavia WFC from Rwanda pulled out citing Covid-19 challenges.
Uganda’s representative Lady Doves, who won the FUFA Super League, are in Group A alongside Tanzania’s Simba Queens and Burundi’s PVP FC. While Group B has Commercial Bank FC (Ethiopia), Yei Joint Stars FC (South Sudan) and New Generation (Zanzibar)
The eventual winners of the tournament are meant to represent CECAFA region in the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League to be held in Egypt later this year.
