Betty Chelangat won 3,000m gold for Kenya at the World Under 20 Athletics Under-20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.
As Chelangat ran to victory, her compatriot Nancy Cherop won bronze medal in the opening day of the championships, to retain the last year’s title won by Teresiah Muthomni Gateri with Zenah Jemutai settling for silver at the Kasarani stadium.
Chelangat won the first gold for the after crossing the finish line in 9:01.03 ahead of Ethiopia’s Tsiyon Abebe in 9:03.85 and settling for bronze in 9:05.98.
Last year, Chelangat finished fourth in the 1,500m and missed out on the place in the final team.
She also competed for Kenya Prisons finishing in third position
Teresiah Muthoni and Zenah Jemutai, with Ethiopia’s Melknat Wudu settling for third place.
