Reigning world 5,000m bronze medalist Margaret Chelimo edged out world cross country champion Hellen Obiri and world cross country junior champion Beatrice Chebet to win the Cross Internacional de Itálica in Santiponce, the world Athletics Cross Country permit series in Spain’s city of Seville.
On-form Chelimo clocked 28:37 with ahead of world under 20 5,000m champion Chebet to second in 28:49.
Ethiopia’s Tsehay Gemechu placed third in 29:00 while two time world 5,000m champion Obiri closed the top four places in 29:27 ahead of Eva Cherono, who placed fifth in 29:41
In the men’s category Richard Yator was the highest placed Kenyan in third place in 27:48. The race was won by Ethiopia’s Tadese Worku in 27:31 with USA’s Paul Chelimo second in 27:47.
