Chemutai claim Nyanza Ladies open meet

Nandi Bear’s golfer Faith Chemutai claimed the second leg of Western Kenya Ladies’ Open golf series played today at the Nyanza golf club in Kisumu County.

The long hitter, who on Saturday won the longest drive prize during the Safaricom Golf Tour fired four under par 68 to emerge the overall gross winner ahead of tomorrow’s Kakamega, followed by Nandi Bears, Kitale, Eldoret and the Golfer Of the Year (GOTY) at the Eldoret course.

She fired a number of birdies and pars to claim the title saying that shoe could have played better if the course was in good condition and easily playable.

“This was the most challenging course. The fairways were full of water making the play difficult, however, the greens were good enough,” said Chemutai, who last month represented Kenya at the Magical Kenya Ladies’ Open, failing to make the cut.

She started well with a par, followed by a birdie in the second, back to back pars in 3rd and 4th, recovered with a birdie in 5th before paring in the remaining holes for a total of one under par 35 in the first nine.

She had the best in the second when she fired level in the first three holes, birdied in 13th and 14th a par in the 15th dropped two shots in the 16th before paring in the 17th and 17th for a total of three under par 33.

In Division A category, former Eldoret captain Jane Koech was victorious with 68 net, followed by Doris Bett with 77 net and former Eldoret lady captain Esther Chumo completing the podium on 79 net.

Kakamega golfer Elizabeth Akinyi won Division B with 73 net beating Risper Miting, Gorrety Mutai and Rosemary Obara to second third and 4th after firing 74, 75 and 76 net.

Division C was won by Martha Okello with 34 points followed by Corla Obare (27) and Alice Gorney (23).
