Chipu surrender to Uruguay at U20 rugby opener

Kenya Under 20 rugby team, Chipu lost their opening match to Uruguay in the opening match of the Rugby World under 20 Trophy in Brazil.

The Paul Odera led side lost 63-11 with the winners making nine tries, six conversions and two penalties as Kenya made one try and two penalties.

The South Americans led 39-3 at the interval. Kenya is making her second appearance at the World Junior trophy after playing at the 2009 edition held in Nairobi.

Earlier matches played in the opening day of the global tournament saw Japan beat hosts Brazil 56-24 and Tonga see off Canada 26-25.

Late kick-off saw Portugal beat Hong Kong 59-27 to close match day one. 

Kenya’s next match is on Saturday at 1am against Brazil who will also be seeking a first win. Winner of the World Junior trophy will be promoted to next season’s World Rugby U20s.
