Kenyan rugby family is mourning another death of rugby player Victor Wayodi from Mwamba RC with just a week after the death of Nondescripts RFC Ogeto Gacheo who died after a freak injury during a Kenya Cup game.
Wayodi, who is the scrum half player suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday during a Kenya Cup match against Nakuru RFC which ended 10-10 at the Impala Club and sadly passed on while being attended to at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital in Hurlingham.
Mwamba RFC posted on their official twitter account; “It’s with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our scum-half and captain Victor Wayodi. #RipWayodi.”
“He suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch and was taken into the ambulance and the doctors decided to rush him to hospital. He was still conscious all that time up until around 9pm when he passed on. He had even been talking and the last thing he asked for was water.
This was the first match Wayodi was playing in two months since suffering a soft tissue back injury during an Impala Floodlights match in October.
The rugby fraternity has joined the Mwamba family in mourning with messages of condolences flooding social media.
The 24-year old’s death brings into sharper scrutiny the state of player health and safety during matches, another big headache for the Kenya Rugby Union.
