Eldoret City Marathon adds One Mile race, launches Climate Action campaign

Organizers of the Eldoret City Marathon have introduced a One Mile road race and vowed to deliver a bigger, better event on April 26, 2026, promising a world-class meet that will boost the local economy. The race purse is KSh 18 million, with the men’s and women’s winners set to receive KSh 3.5 million each.

The new One Mile event for middle-distance track athletes was unveiled today alongside the marathon’s Climate Action theme during a tree-planting session at Eldoret Hill School, part of pre-race activities with partners. Race Director Moses Tanui said the climate initiative aims to protect and secure running spaces for athletes across the region and country.

“The introduction of the One Mile road race for middle-distance athletes will make the 2026 edition bigger and better,” Tanui said, stressing the organisers’ commitment to environmental stewardship.

Tanui, a retired marathoner and two-time winner of both the Boston and Vienna marathons, also called for clean sport, saying athletes must avoid doping that would bring shame to the country. “We are working with Athletics Kenya and the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya to ensure robust anti-doping measures are in place,” he said.

Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker Philip Muigei, who attended the tree planting, urged legislation to sustain financing for county sporting events. Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea, whose county is the race’s title sponsor, said Eldoret is ready to welcome thousands of fans and athletes to the extravaganza.
