Eldoret City marathon: Lydia Wafula to make marathon debut

Tired with pace-setting, former Africa 800m junior champion Lydia Wafula has decided to compete in marathon following her success in track events.

The sensational runner will be making her marathon debut on Sunday’s Eldoret City marathon as she tries to make her name in road running.

“I have been setting the pace for many athletes and it’s time for me to make a mark in road race,” said Wafula.

The Iten based runner paced for Helen Obiri to run her world best at the Doha Diamond league in 2014 timing 8:20.68 in 3,000.

“I have done what any athlete can do in career and it’s high time I take myself to the road to achieve one of my goals,” said Wafula.

At the same time, she said that most track events have seasons and once they season closes, many athletes become idle compared to road races which is a continues process.

“I will be launching my marathon career on Sunday and maintain my standards. Road running has no end compared to track events that are mostly seasonal,” said Wafula who trains under Italian manager Gianni Demadona.

She added that she has trained well and will be ready to face the new challenge.
