Election postponement is a letdown in sports, says NOC-K officials

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) officials expressed their disappointments following the postponement of elections that were slated for today in Nairobi.

Both team Francis Mutuku, the outgoing Secretary General and outgoing vice President Shadrack Maluki, who are all vying for the president’s position said that it was a bad day, which is athletes’ let down.

The stalemate came after four federations disagreed on who is eligible to vote on their behalf despite the High Court and the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) allowing elections to go on.

The four federations that failed to come to a conclusion were the Kenya Handball Federation, Kenya Volleyball Federation, Kenya Triathlon Federation and the Kenya Taekwondo Federation.

Vying for the position of vice president in the Maluki team, the Executive Member Barnaba Korir was disappointed saying the move will affect athletes.

Mutuku said the standoff forced the executive to step back and allow President Dr. Paul Tergat to mediate.

In the morning, the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) reversed its own decision to halt the elections after an appeal was filed on Thursday morning.

Mutuku said the adjournment of the polls due to an impasse within four federations does not set a good example for sports administration.

The deadlock was the culmination of what had been a boardroom/court battles and all attempts to reach a resolution within the four federations came an end.
