Elgeyo Marakwet dominates junior races in North Rift

Elgeyo Marakwet dominated 6km junior women, sweeping all top five positions in the North Rift Athletics Kenya regional championships held today at Maralal Sports ground in Samburu County.

Feliciana Kanda led other athletes from christened Home of Champions to the top positions after timing 20:05.2 edging out school girl Ages Jebet who returned second in 25:05.83 before Winnie Kimutai completed the podium 20:23.5 as Vivian Cheruiyot and Leah Kibet were in ourth and 5th positions respectively.

Samuel Chebole was the surprise winner 8km junior men race after returning in 23:22.7 edging out Charles Kakuri of West pokot (23:39.3) and Reuben Longosiwa’s 23”43.3.

North Rift region consists of five counties-Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu.

It was also a time for new talents that emerged in the championships ahead of National championships cum trials to be staged in Eldoret on 23rd February ahead of world cross country championships in Aarhus, Denmark on 30th March.

After two weeks of winning Discovery Kenya Cross country championships in Eldoret, former world junior cross country runner Brilliant Jepkorir won the 10km women race timing 33:36.9 ahead of Samburu’s Vicot Chepngeno (34:98.7) before Gloria Kite completed the podium clocking 34:49.6.

In 10km senior men, little known Michael Kibet won the race timing 29:39.6 ahead Mathew Kimeli (29:57.4) and Raymond Magut’s 30:06.7.

In junior race, it was all Elgeyo Marakwet who swept the podium in 6km junior women. Feliciana kanda led in 20:05.2 beating Ages Jebet’s 25:05.83 and Winnie Kimutai in third timing 20:23.5.

Samburu’s Samuel Chebole won the 8km junior men in 23:22.7 edging out Charles Kakuri of West pokot (23:39.3) and Reuben Longosiwa’s 23”43.3.

North Rift region consists of five counties-Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu.
