Olympic Games 800m champion Emmanuel wanyonyi defied the odds to win gold on the penultimate round of World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
The former world under 20 800m champion improved from his silver he won two years ago to gold after revenging against Canadian Marco Arop in today’s final.
Wanyonyi won the two lap race with the championships record of 1:41.86, ahead of Algerian Djamel Sedjati (1:41.9) for silver before Arop settling for bronze 1:41.95.
Wanyonyi’s win takes Kenya’s gold tally to six at the championships – to add to three silver and one bronze they have clinched thus far.
Gold medals have been won Peres Jepchirchir in marathon, Beatrice Chebet in 10,000m and 5,000m, Faith Kipyegon in 1,500m and Faith Cherotich in the 3,000m steeplechase .
Silver were won by Faith Kipyegon in the 5,000m and Dorcas Ewoi in the 1,500m while bronze was won Edmund Serem in the 3,000m steeplechase.
