Evans Chebet focused to reclaim New York City marathon title

After missing out on the Olympic Games marathon team, double Boston marathon champion Evans Chebet has set his focus to compete at the New York City marathon come November 3rd 2024.

The athlete, who is also a large scale maize farmer, won Boston marathon in 2022 and 2023 said that he missed the Olympics marathon team due to the injury he picked in 2022.

“In 2020, I ran very well just as 2021 but got an injury and got lost but what I know is that in this race, there are challenges and people may ask where is so and so and that means that they care and follow what we do. Many fans kept on asking where I was because they used to see me in Boston, and New York,” said Chebet.

The 2022 New York City marathon champion, who will be seeking to reclaim his title, said that he picked the stress fracture injury on his left leg, forcing him to be out of competition for long.

“I was out but God knows why since I have won Boston marathon twice and New York City among others. And coming from an injury, I competed at the Boston marathon this year, finishing third and I was happy with the position,” he said.

He said that he could have gone for the Olympic Games in Paris France but the injury kept him off however, he applauded Athletics Kenya for selecting an intomidable team and will do well.

“I was not even disturbed when Olympics marathon team was selected. The Olympics team of Eliud Kipchoge, Alexander Mutiso and Benson Kipruto, having run together, they will do well. A team work will be great to bring gold home,” he said.

“As a person I am very happy for the team. They selected a strong team and since I am going to New York City marathon, I am happy and I have started training ahead of New York. Let’s pray for good things not bad things to bring good results,,” added Chebet.

He said that last year he did not run New York since he was on treatment before returning to Boston, running with a slight injury.

“Finishing top three while running with an injury was not easy. I believe I am capable to compete well this year in New York City,” he said.
