Kenyans Fancy Cherono and Francis Kesoo Pesi won Kenya two gold medals on the penultimate of Africa Youth Games today in Algiers, Algeria.
Cherono, who finished 6th at the Commonwealth Games, won kenya’s 5th gold in the championships with her 2,000m steeplechase title.
She crossed the finish line in 6:17.68 ahead of Ethiopian Abebe Demewoz who was second in 6:17.86 and Ugandan Esther Yego was third 6:41.23.
Another gold came from Francis Keshoo Pesi in 800m by clocking 1:50.72 to win relegating Moroccan Mohamed Abouettahery and Tasew Yada Mulu from Ethiopia to silver and bronze in 1.51.12 and 1.51.52 respectively.
Ita Nao won silver in boys’ Javelin to win silver to wrap up track Kenya’s track action with 11 medals: four gold, three silver and four bronze.
Nickson Lesiyia Pariken won boys’ 1,500m while Samuel Mwita finished 6th in boys’ 400m by clocking 48.96 in race won by Zambian Kennedy Luchembe in 46.21.
Overall, Kenya had 15 medals: six gold, three silver and five bronze after Maria Maria Brunlehner won two gold medals and silver in girls’ swimming with the boys’ hockey team settling for bronze.
