Gaspo Women, here is your half a million Prize money

Former Harambee Stars player Sammy Owino has promised to give Kenya Women Premier league side Gaspo Women half a million shillings as prize money after finishing second in the league that concluded over the weekend.

Gaspo, who finished second behind champions Vihiga Queens, went home empty handed despite playing in the league for nine months.

Speaking in Eldoret during the vote hunt ahead of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections, Owino, popularly called Kempes said that the team will receive kshs 500,000 as part of their prize money after missing on the bigger cake of the FKF who only rewarded the championships with kshs 1 million.

“When I heard about the issues about the women league runners up that they are having, Mama Diouf (Charity Wangoma) made a plea and I am going to donate half a million shillings to the team. They are not going to go empty handed but they go home with something,” said owino.

He added that he already has the money and how they are going to distribute and meet the team is all about that.

“Kenyans are used to empty promises and lies. This time, we are talking and doing what is expected. We will give the money as soon as we can. If it is possible to give today or tomorrow, we will do it,” said Owino.

The American based Kenyan was accompanied by former Harambee Stars player Sammy Sholei and 14 other officials from Rift Valley.

Initially, Wangoma, who also runs a women football team in Uasin Gishu had made a plea in supporting women teams in the country with finances starting from former premier league side Eldoret Falcons that dropped from the top tier to the second tier among other teams.

She said that the prize was beautiful and one of the best news for so many years.

“Right now, we can move together. We are going to break news and this is awesome. On behalf of Gaspoo women, we are grateful. Since we have so many ladies from all over the rift valley, we appreciate that and we live and trust that this will also go down to the teams playing in Division one especially like our own Eldoret Falcons, we shall also figure out on how you are going to support them,” she said.

She added that they have three women’s teams in Uasin Gishu right now that are playing in Division and several in regional and county leagues who need total support financially.
