Victoria Muthoni led other girls as they dominated Kenya Scrabble (SK)
Youth championship held over the weekend at Kahuhia Girls high school during the Central Regional High school Scrabble tournament.
Playing on home ground advantage, Muthoni led top three girls in the
tournament that attracted 84 scrabble youth players with hopes of
emerging the top Kenyan youth in the country.
Apart from girls taking top positions, they also had a high number of
registered players. Muthoni led Jaymary Wairinga from Kabare Girls to
second position before Linnet Njeri from Mugoiri bagged bronze. Positions 4 and 5 were bagged by Lul Saney from Mugoiri and Amina
Mohammed from Kahuhia respectively.
Muthoni’s win was a blessing for her school as she led her school top
the charts followed by Alliance Girls, Kabare girls, Buruburu girls,
Mugoiri girls, Baricho Boys and Moi Gils for top seven positions.
At the end of the tournament, the teams that were fielded were able to
be ranked according to their strength, this was done to award the best
teams and also to encourage the others to take up the sport across the
region.
The tournament is among many of scrabble Kenya’s initiative to spread
the gospel that is scrabble and also to motivate and mentor the young
brains and word Smiths in school.
SK chairman Bernard Amuke urged the school patrons to ask for any
assistance necessary from Scrabble Kenya.
“We know that the youth are our future. When they are young, they are
able to retain more words, and therefore can easily become world
champions. We have seen it done in Thailand and Nigeria, and we know
we can do it,” he said.
