Gitonga stun world champion as WESPAC continues in Goa

Kenya’s Gitonga Nderitu stunned reigning world champion Akshay Bhandarka 775-295 at the ongoing World English Players Scrabble Championships Association (WESPAC) in Goa, India.

Allan Oyende and Nderitu are top Kenyan, anchoring Word Warriors, the national Scrabble team ahead of tomorrow’s finals with players taking on 32 rounds.

As Nderitu edged Akshay, Kenya One Oyende finished second in the second day of the championships while Nderitu was 7th.

Oyende had registered 13 wins and 3 losses with a point behind leader Jesse Day from the United States while Nderitu is currently in 7th with 11 wins.

Other Kenyans include Onani Magwanga, Fred Magu, Martins Mutahi and Limo Kipkemoi registered 7 wins.

Two Kenyans Limo Kipkemoi and Wenwa Akinyi qualified to play in the main event after emerging victorious.

The games end on Saturday after which the two top players will participate in a best of 7 challenge to claim the top prize.
