Kenya Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia won the first CAF Championships Cup play-off match against New Stars de Douala played at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
After exiting CAF Champions league in the hands of Lobi Stars of Nigeria, Gor Mahia defeated New Stars de Douala 2-1 to carry a one goal advantage back to Cameroon in a week’s time.
Jacques Tuyisenge scored the winner in the 87th minute adding on Lawrence Juma’s 41st minute opener.
On 72nd minute, Benjamin Bechem cancelled out Juma’s goal as they were headed for a draw but experienced Tusiyenge grabbed the win for the hosts.
Juma took Shafik Batambuze’s deep pass from the left flank in his stride before lifting the ball over his marker into an empty net after Kibyen had dramatically left his line protesting his water bottle had been picked from the post by a steward.
New Stars defender Orian Jores was the first to go into Tunisian referee Guirat Haythem’s book on 67 minutes after bringing down a full-flight Mustafa just outside the box on the left flank.
K’Ogalo need a draw of any kind in the reverse tie in Limbe next Sunday to progress to the group stage of this competition.
