Sheila Juma and John Mele bagged a hattrick to help Kenyatta University and Kabarak University shine in the opening football women and men respectively when Kenya University Sports Federations (KUSF) National Play-offs that kicked off on today morning at the Kenyatta University Grounds.
Nicknamed Messi due to her ability to score from all angles in the box just like the Argentina icon, Juma guided her KU women football edge out 5-1 in field A.
The opened the flood of goals in the 5th minute after the start for a 1-0 lead before Lilian Zawadi double for the hosts for 2-0.
As the hosts celebrated the second goal, Susan Nyamwalo halved the score, which was the consolation for 2-1 lead but Juma restored the lead with her brace for 3-1 into the break.
On resumption, Diana Barasa’s name was o the score sheet to extend KU’s 4-1 lead as Juma sealed the victory with 5-1.
In a turn of events, Taita Taveta University (TTU) earned maximum points after Tharaka Nithi University failed to show up for the championships.
In men, it was a one sided match when Kabarak humiliated TTU 8-0 in field B when Mele scored 3 out of 8.
Mele opened the gate of goals first for a 1-0 followed by Cretor Dalar for the second and Geoffrey Kakuri made it 3-0.
Mele was on target for the brace and 4th for his side and Dalar scored a brace and 5th for Nakuru based school then Mele was back scoring a hattrick and 6th for the university.
Jesse Irungu managed to squeeze in the 7th and Shamah Ismail made it 8-0 at the final whistle.
However, two matches were handed a walk over after their opponents failed to show up. In the first encounter, Strathmore were handed 2 gaols and 3 points after Chuka failed to come before Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) earned points against Maseno.
Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) Unibversity and Egerton recorded victories in their opening hockey men matches.
KCA were 2-0 winners over Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) while Egerton managed a 1-0 win over Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
In ladies, Laikipia played to a barren draw against Kaimosi.
The University of Eldoret and Daystar University were 16-13 and 16-06 winners over Kisii and Chuka Unibersities in handball men while MMUST, Embu and UOE were 20-10, 14-11 and 18-11 winners over Machakos, Garissa and The University of Nairobi respectively in women handball.
