Newly crowned world marathon record holder Sebastian Sawe returned in the country in a heroic welcome by the government officials, Athletics Kenya, family and friends, bringing the Jomo Kenyatta International airport to a standstill.
Sawe, the winner of 2025 Berlin marathon set the 42km world record with victory at the 2026 London marathon held on Sunday April 26th with 1:59:30, becoming the first man to run a marathon under 2 hours.
At the airport, he was handed water salute for his extraordinary achievement on a difficult course, having last witnessed a world record broken 24 years ago.
There was jubilation upon arrival for the 30-year-old Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya led his junior, the Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi and Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei as well as family members and fans.
