Honouring legendary Kipchoge Keino

The postponed World Athletics Tour Athletics Series in Nairobi will be called Kip Keino Classic.

The track and field championships that were set for May 2nd was postponed to September 26th due to the coronavirus pandemic that has rocked the world.

Nairobi’s meeting will be opening the World Athletics Series with Nyayo National Stadium being the host of the “Kip Keino Classic.”

The meeting according to organizers led by Athletics Kenya Nairobi region branch chairman Barnaba Korir, the race will be honoring legendary runner Kipchoge Keino.

Kipchoge won gold in 1,5000m at the 1968 Mexico Olympics before claiming victory in 3,000m steeplechase at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

“Kipchoge is the father of Kenyan athletics and the world knows him more than any Kenyan in athletics,” said Korir.

The one-day event will feature 10,000m, 5,000, 200m, 3000m steeplechase, discus, hammer and triple jump, with ten events where they have divided into three levels – Gold, Silver and Bronze – whose status will be determined by the quality of competition and prize money.
