Jemutai and Chemutai set for Sirikwa Classic

Ascar Jemutai and Ruth Chemutai will be seeking their maiden titles when they line up at the Sirikwa Classic Cross country championships.

The 16-year-old Jemutai is optimistic that she will run well at both the Discovery and Sirikwa.

“I am preparing well for the Sirikwa Classic and I will be competing in the under 18 category,” said the form two, now entering form three student at Cheptonon secondary school in Nandi County.

She added that she has been learning well from other training mates led by Edna Jebitok, Debora Chemutai among others.

“This camp has skilled my profession and learning from them to my advantage. We train well and that has given me confidence,” she said.

Seventeen-year-old Chemutai has the desire to represent the country in major races this year after missing out on Bathurst trip but with Africa under 20 and under 18 coming up, she has the chance to run again.

She said that competing at the Sirkwa race will be great because she will be facing off against other athletes from across the world.

“Being in a camp, it has been helpful to my career and I want to run a better race in future after missing out on the Bathurst journey. I have so far increased my speed and speed work,” she said.

The two athletes are part of the Athletics Kenya and the ministry of sports sponsorship in the country.

“They are top junior athletes in our camp and we are expecting them to represent Kenya in major championships this year,” said Sanga.
