Jesse Jackson grabbed a hat trick as Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) thrashed Turkana University College (TUC) to romp into men’s football quarter finals of the 7th edition of Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) Games currently going at the Moi University Annex Campus.
Following a barren draw in the first half, JKUAT utilized their experience to defeat TUC 4-0 in the last match of pool D to book the quarterfinal play against Kenya Methodist University who finished second in pool A.
Martin Matundura opened the goal marathon in the first minute of the second half when he converted the penalty before Jackson scoring the first goal two minutes later, grabbed a brace five minutes before rounding off the defence for a hat trick.
Hosts who finished second in pool D will face Technical University of Kenya (TUK) who led pool A. Moi played to a 2-all draw against newcomers TUC in the earlier match. Moi scored through Moses Karani and Ali Ahmed’s on goal while TUC goals came from Benedict Letemol and Enock Nakutan.
Despite CUEA losing 4-0 to former champions KU, they managed to sail into the quarterfinals following the withdrawal of Kisii University.
KU earned their first win with goals from Brian Ogutu who scored a brace, breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute before securing a brace 13 minutes latter as Brian Okeya and Maxwell Odengo scored a goal apiece to top pool B.
In volleyball, Kenya Prison head coach Josp Barasa faced off with his student Sally Wanjala in women’s encounter between last year finalists Strathmore University and United States International University (USIU).
Coaching Strathmore, Barasa who trained Wanjala at KCB and Kenya Prisons defeated USIU in staright sets of 3-0 (25-01, 25-22 and 25-18 in the last match after Bomet University College 3-0 (25-18, 25-08 and 25-11).
Reigning champion Kenyatta University (KU) defeated The University of Nairobi (UON) 3-0 in 25-18, 25-15 and 25-23 to lead pool A as Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) were 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 15-25 and 25-16) winners over hosts Moi University.
In men’s title chase, hosts Moi University faced a tough challenge against Mount Kenya University (MKU) 3-2 in one of the longest serving encounter and defeated TUC 3-0 (25-15, 25-15 and 25-08).
MKU won the opening set 18-25 but hosts managed to re-energysed to win the second in 25-20, and MKU countered to settle for 17-25 in the third but Moi won the last two sets in 25-17 and 15-12.
In another men’s encounter, Strathmore registered an easy win in straight sets of 25-06, 25-09 and 25-11 against Moi.
