John Kariuki takes Amateur Strokeplay lead in Sigona

John Kariuki played level par to take a one shot lead in the first round of Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championships, the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series on par 72 Sigona golf club today.

The Limuru Country club golfer commanded the lead with three birdies in the last nine to gran the lead defeating Dubai based Bradley Mogire to managed a one over par 73 ahead the second and third round on Saturday before ending the gruesome 72 holes tournament which counts as an automatic qualification for 2019 Kenya Open golf championships.

He started badly with a bogey on hole one par four but he recovered well when he parred on holes 2-6 double bogeyed on 7 par 4 but back to back pars on holes 8 to 9 motivated him to take up the second nine with energy.

At the back nine, he birdied on holes 14 par three, holes 17 and 18 pars 4 was good enough to send him to the top. He also registered six pars to lead a slim lead ahead of Railways club’s Samuel Njoroge on two over 74, Samuel Njoroge wins third title in Kericho who won the Tea Fields golf tournament last weekend in kericho.

Limuru’s John Karichu was in 4th place with three over par 75.

The event continues tomorrow with second and third rounds.
