Joyciline Jepkosgei to launch her marathon in Honolulu

Reigning world half marathon record holder Joyciline Jepkosgei will be making her debut in marathon during next month’s Honolulu marathon in USA.

The 2016 Africa 10,000m bronze medalist broke the world half marathon to 64:51, lowering Peris Jepchirchir’s time of 65:06 but she will not be working her way to lower her time again since she has to concentrate on 42km distance.

“For now, my focus is to run marathon better. I know the transition might be challenging but I will do my best. And going to Honolulu, I want to get good time just like what I did in half marathon,” said Jepkosgei.

The 24 year old runner will be competing with other elite runners at the 46th edition of the race as one of the world big city marathons.

She said her training has been well and hopes to run well in her debut.

“My training has been normal and I want to make a difference. The training has been going on well,” said the Iten based runner.

Jepkosgei will be working her way to defend what Kenyan runners have been doing in Honolulu. Former world half marathon champion Brigid Kosgei won the title in 2016 and defended her title in 2017.

Coached by her husband Nicholas Koech, Jepkosgei was the late entry into the starters’ list and admitted she is not under pressure to deliver the title.

“My preparations are on top gear and I am not under pressure to win the race. Coming from half marathon to marathon, the transition will be good for me,” added Jepkosgei.

The former Cheptil secondary school student trains in the high altitude area promised a stiff competition once she steps on the starting line-up.

“I know the competition will be so stiff but I won’t be left out. I will provide a healthy competition too now that I am preparing well for the race,” added Jepkosgei.
