Junior camps to host mini trials for world under 20 championships

Athletics Kenya has given an opportunity for each of the 26 athletics camps across the country to host their mean trials ahead world under 20 trials to select the team that will be mandated to defend the World Under 20 title in Cali, Colombia come August.

Speaking during the commissioning of Plateau camp based at the Plateau Girls secondary school in Uasin Gishu county, the federation’s Youth and Development chairman Barnaba Korir said that all the camps will host their trials, to select a good team to compete at the national levels for Colombia tickets where Kenya will be seeking their third title after winning in 2018 in Tampere, Finland and Nairobi, Kenya.

“The camps will have their competition to select their best team that they will present during the trials in July and these camps will be the benchmark for all. They will select a team that has the capacity to compete. At the same time, we must also give them qualifying time for them tom achieve before coming for trials,” he said.

Korir, who is also the Nairobi region chairman said that the camps spread across the country is to give young talented children an opportunity to run in some of the areas that were less exploited.

“The success of such camps has given us an opportunity to continue with the spirit like world under 20 last year, winning eight gold medals, the highest ever to be recorded in such championships by one country with most medals coming from these camps and this year’s show in Cali,” he added.

He also urged the government to allow co-curricula activities in schools to help in developing career in talents.

“We started these camps so that we give opportunities to most athletes who are still outside and we should them opportunity to compete in any form of sports. We want now to introduce kids’ athletics in the same curriculum in schools so that the student can have that opportunity to exploit their talents in both primary and secondary and from their they can get an opportunity to for s scholarship to go to the USA or any other country that offers such scholarships,” said Korir.
