Kenya won a record 11 medals at the World Athletics championships that came to a close yesterday in Tokyo, Japan.
With Kenya dominating in middle and long distance running, won seven gold, two silver and two silver to complete the biennial event in position two behind the USA.
Gold medals were won by Beatrice Chebet, who managed double in 10,000m and 5,000m, Faith Kipyegon in the 1,500m, Peres Jepchirchir in marathon, Emmanuel Wanyonyi (800m), Lilian Odira (800m) and Faith Cherotich in the 3,000m steeplechase.
Two silver medals were won by Kipyegon in the 5,000m and Dorcas Ewoi in the 1,500m while bronze medals were won by Edmund Serem (3,000m steeplechase) and Reynold Cheruiyot in 1,500m.
Apart from medals, Kenyans Wanyonyi, Odira and Cherotich won the championships records where a record number of nations won medals at the Championships with 53 nations making it to the medal table with one world record (Mondo Duplilants), nine championship records and nine area records were set.
Countries like Samoa (Alex Rose), Saint Lucia (Julien Alfred), Uruguay (Julia paternain) and Tanzania (Alphonce Felix Simbu) had their first ever gold medals, World Championships gold for Tanzania.
According to the World Athletics, a total of 1992 athletes took part from 193 different countries and the Athlete Refugee Team with a total of 619,288 fans attending.
