Kenya Lionesses, the national women basketball team returned home on Sunday evening at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after qualifying for the Fiba Afrobasket tournament to be staged in Yaoundé, Cameroon in September.
The George Mayienga coached team whipped Egypt during the finals of the Fiba Afrobasket Zone V qualifiers at the Kigali Arena in Kigali, Rwanda on Saturday to book the single slot for the East Africa region.
Lionesses won 99-83 against Egypt after setting up a sweet revenge against hosts in the semifinals 77-45, beat South Sudan 66-48 and Egypt 107-106 at the group stages played in round-robin.
Kenya had initially lost to Rwanda 79-52 in the opening match and the win has propelled them to play against Cape Verde and host Cameroon that have already qualified for the 12-nation Fiba Africa Championship for Women (AfroBasket) 2021 slated for September 17-26.
The finalists will represent Africa at the 2022 Fiba Women’s Basketball World Cup.
