Kenyan teams recorded good results in day one of the World Athletics Relays Championships that kicked off today at the Guangzhou, China.
Two teams have already qualified to compete at the World Athletics Championships slated for September in Tokyo, Japan.
At the track today, the quartet of Kelvin Kipkorir, Mercy Chebet, david Sanayek and Mercy Adongo qualified to compete in Tokyo in the 4x400m mixed relays with a blistering time of 3:13.41 seconds to finish third in heat one behind Belgium, who won the heat in 3:11.83 seconds followed by Australia’s 3:12.34 seconds.
Others who have qualified for the Tokyo is the team of men’s 4x400m relay team made up of Zablon Ekwam, Boniface Mweresa, Brian Onyari and Kevin Kipkorir.
The team finished second in the fourth heat in 3:00.88 seconds behind France while the USA was third.
Ferdinand Omanyala, who led the 4x100m relay men’s team failed to make the cut after finishing third.
Made up of Omanyala, captain Boniface Mweresa, Meshack Babu and Steve Onyango missed the Tokyo ticket after a third finish with a new national record of 38.35 seconds, however, they will compete at the repecharge tomorrow.
It was a bad day for women’s 4x400m relay team of Esther Mbagari, Mercy Chebet, Vanice Kerubo and Mercy Adongo who finished 4th to miss the qualifying round.
