Kipruto, Chepkirui break 10km world records at Valencia Ibercaja 10k

World under 20 10,000m champion Rhonex Kipruto and Sheila Chepkirui led Kenyan runners top podium sweep by breaking the world 10km distance during Valencia Ibercaja 10k Road Race ran on Sunday 12th January 2020.

The world 10,000m bronze medallist broke a six-week world record set by Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei, shaking off 14 seconds, winning in 26:24 ahead of compatriot Benard Kimeli finished second in 27:12, just ahead of Switzerland’s Julien Wanders, who set a European record of 27:13.

In women, Chepkirui led the podium sweep for an all Kenyan runners with a world record. The Kericho based runner clocked Africa 10,000m silver medalist Rosemary Wanjiru Monica before Africa 3,000m steeplechase champion Norah Jeruto competing the podium.

As they prepare for Olympic Games, Chepkirui won in 29:42 as Wanjiru followed in 29:46 in a photo finish with Jerutu (29:46).
