Kipyegon, Chemutai shine at Shanghai Diamond League

Triple Olympic Games champion Faith Kipyegon and Peruth Chemutai were the winners of today’s Diamond League in China, the opening leg of Wanda Diamond League series.

Kipyegon won the 5,000m with a world-leading performance after clocking 14:05.20 beating Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw came in second in a personal best of 14:30:54 while her country-mate Getachew Senayet completed the podium in a personal best of 14:24:71.

Caroline Nyaga was 9th as Maurine Chebor finished eleventh.

Reigning Commonwealth games 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala managed to finish second in the 100m after clocking another sub-10 crossing the finish line in 9.98 seconds behind South Africa’s Gift Leotlela who was too strong, winning in 9.97 seconds while the United States’ Kenneth Bednarek completed the podium at 9.98.

In men’s 3,000m, former world under 20 1,500m champion  Reynold Cheruiyot managed second position 7:26.11 behind Germany’s Abdilaahi Mohammed won the title in 7:25.77as Sweden’s Andreas Almgren claimed third in a national record of 7:26.48 while Timothy Cheruiyot missed out on a podium finish in fourth place, clocking 7:27.24.

In 3,000m steeplechase women, Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai won the title ahead of Kenyan Faith Cherotich.

Chemutai won in 8:51.47 with a meeting record of 9:07.36 set by Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet in April 2024.

Kenya’s Faith Cherotich was second at 8:51.48 before Tunisia’s Marwa Bouzayani completed the podium in 8:58.09.
