Recovering from a knee injury, former Boston marathon champion Wesley Korir is optimistic that once the coronavirus pandemic will be over, he will return in action to continue with his running career without disturbance.
Speaking in Eldoret the former Cherangany legislature said he has been battling with the injury for the past one year he picked during the 2019 Boston marathon, the race he wants to run after it was postponed to September 14th that was to be held on April 20th in the USA.
“My target is to run on Boston marathon following the postponement due to coronavirus, hoping my injury will have been healed 100% unlike now,” said the 2012 Boston marathon winner.
Korir, who has been championing for athletes rights said his good fortunes have been in Boston and has competed on the course for better part of his marathon career he started way back in 2008.
“Boston and Chicago have been my best courses and I have been running well on the course and returning to Boston this year will be my greatest achievement,” he said.
The two time Los Angeles marathon winner, however, said the disease will be helping those in injury to recover well for the forthcoming championships and events across the world.
“When all the races and championships have been cancelled or postponed, the athletes like me who are nursing injuries will be creating a good opportunity to heal before the races resume. It will be an advantage for us,” added the runner.
Korir who won the Los Angeles marathon in 2009 and 2011 in 2:08.24 and 2:09.19 also finished 4th and 6th at 2008 and 2009 Chicago marathon respectively timing 2:13.53 and 2:10.38.
The 38-year-old runner said his target is to reclaim his position in Boston in a country he spent much of his time as a youth and an athlete.
Chicago remains his course that he has competed most, starting from 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012, but his luck came in 2011 where he finished second clocking 2:06.15.
He made his Boston marathon debut with a win in 2012 where he clocked 2:12.40. the following year, he failed to defend his title finishing 5th the same position in 2013 and 2014. Came in 4th position in 2016 and sunk deep in 2017 in 15th position.
