Koyonzo high school defeated Butula secondary school to win the Western Region Secondary Schools Sports Association (WRSSSA) rugby7s title at St Peter’s Mumias Boys High school in Kakamega County.
Playing in home county, Koyonzo were 26-05 winners against Busia based Butula as they both booked the national tickets set for next week in Nakuru.
Jackson Siketa touched down first with captain Brian Kiptanui converting before Kiptanui added the second try and converted his own try for 14-0 lead then Victor Wawire touched down before Kiptanui missed a conversion for a 19-0 lead into break.
on resumption, Brandon Mulefu scored another try Kiptanui converting for 26-0 but Butula took advantage of numbers when James Asanga was sent on sin bin Collins Omwodo and Rayvon Ambale missing the conversion for a 26-05 win.
Kakamega based Koyonzo head coach Oscar Okorang said that their plans to play at the finals began in 2020 before coronavirus pandemic.
In volleyball girls Kakamega’s Mwitoti will be facing off with county mates Butere Girls at the finals on Saturday following their victories in semifinals played on Friday evening.
Newcomers Mwitoti lacked respect for multiple national champions Lugulu girls from Bungoma county with 3-0 win in 25-18, 25-17 and 25-18 while Butere defeated little known Busibi in straight sets of 25-07, 25-12 and 25-08.
In the boys’ volleyball boys, Namwela will be hoping to shine over Indangalasia at the finals after flooring them in pool matches.
Coming from Bungoma County, Namwela managed to triumph against Butula High School from Busia in 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 16-25, 13-25).
Indagalasia from Kakamega County beat county mates and former champions Malava Boys High 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-14, 28-26).
According to the Indagalasia school captain Laister Mudibo, the match was not easy and they are happy to have made it all the way to the finals.
“It was tight and we are glad we have reached the finals and our target is to bag the title and proceed to the nationals where we expect other strong teams like Cheptil High School who are always strong. Our target is to proceed into the East Africa Games in Arusha,” he said,” said
