Last laugh for Mwangi with Scrabble Kenya qualifying victory in Bondo

Willy Mwangi emerged victorious at the concluded Scrabble Kenya’s World English Scrabble Players Association Championships (WESPAC) and East, Central and Southern Africa Scrabble Championships (ECASA) qualifiers in Bondo, Siaya County.

Mwangi won his maiden title after four years in the hotly contested final qualifying round to earn a slot for the two international events after edging out top brass players, winning 14 out of 18 games, losing four.

He said that he had much practicing by understanding English words and consistence in what he has been doing.

“I have been making sure that I was a friend with the English Scrabble Dictionary and this win is good for me since I last won in 2019 in Mombasa,” said the 2017 ECASA champion.

The two-day action at Pride Hotel marked the end of five thrilling qualifiers, with the winner earning a point, started in Nyahururu where Nderitu Gitonga was the champion, Allan Oyende winning a triple, Nairobi, Standard Chartered and Kitui before Mwangi winning the last event. In Bondo

He started well with victory against Abdi Kassim, wenmwa Akinyi, Bernard Koyyoko and Patrick Miriti before falling the Tony Ochola, Onani magwanga and Michael Gongolo in the 5th, 6th and 7th games.

But that did not deter his efforts as he managed to recover with a win against Sheriff MalekFrancis Wachia, David Kimani, Charles Kariuki and Ugandan Edgar Ondongkara.

He was heading another blistering victory, Miriti set up a good revenge in the second match to lose his 4th game of the tournament. However, he set up a good show by defeating more others in the race to stardom.

After the conclusion of the qualifiers, top six players led by Oyende, Gongolo, Philip Mutinda, Gitonga, martins Mutahi and Mwangi earned an automatic ticket the Las Vegas USA for WESPAC set for August. Two players led by former chairman Bernard Amuke, Manase Otieno and Richard Oketch are reserved players.

With Kenya hosting ECASA, top 25 players in the qualifiers will automatically play at the championships that will be staged in Nairobi in next month’s Easter Holidays.
