Lokedi replaces Kosgei in Kenya’s marathon team to Paris Olympics

Olympic marathon silver medallist Brigid Kosgei has pulled out of Olympic Games that starts later this month in Paris, France.

The former marathon record holder will be replaced by Tokyo marathon champion Sharon Lokedi after picking an injury.

Today’s statement from the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) revealed Kosgei had sustained an injury during training.

“The Kenya marathon team heading to the Olympic Games in Paris has been training for slightly over two months.”

“It’s during one of the regular monitoring sessions that Olympic silver medallist Brigid Kosgei expressed an injury concern to the technical team,” the statement read.

Following a review by the team’s chief medical officer, James Ondiege, Kosgei decided to pull out.

“Upon a review by the medical team led by the Chief Medical Officer Dr Ondiege, Kosgei will not be heading to Paris for her second Olympics,” the statement read.

Kosgei, who won silver in 2:27:36 at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics behind Peres Jepchirchir (2:27:20), was set for her second appearance in the global show.

She will be replaced by 2022 New York Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi, initially a reserve.

“Lokedi who was named in the reserve team will now join defending champion Jepchirchir and Hellen Obiri to fly Kenya’s flag in Paris,” the statement read.
