Online betting firm Sportpesa has come in to rescue women’s national Volleyball team-Malkia Strikers- to play at the2017 Africa Championships ahead of FIVB Women’s World Championships.
The Cameroon showpiece will be acting as the 2018 FIVB world Championships qualifier in Japan after the national team hit the headlines for the wrong reasons at the end of last week when it emerged they were training without water and electricity.
Kenyan queens are supposed to depart on Thursday for Cameroon in a bid to extend their African winning record to 10.
The showpiece starts this weekend until 14 in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Led by Joyce Kibe, the SportPesa team visited their camp at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Indoor Gymnasium on Tuesday morning and offset the costs of their stay at the facility besides supplying the Malkia stars with new kits.
“This is only the beginning of SportPesa supporting the Women’s National Volleyball team,” Kibe added as she willed them on to conquer Africa and book a sixth appearance at the World Cup..
Kenya Volleyball Federation, Waithaka Kioni, hailed the gesture adding it would motivate the squad coached by Japheth Munala, in their quest to bring back the title they last won in 2015.
“I would be failing if I do not mention SportPesa, an organisation that, during the recent difficulties have come in the 11th hour and provided support that has had the effect of lifting the morale of the players and given them renewed confidence ahead of the upcoming tough matches,” Kioni remarked.
“It is my hope that the support will germinate into a more lasting partnership in the foreseeable future,” he added.
Malkia have represented Africa five times at the World Championships, with the success of the team aiding Kioni to be elected as the second Vice President of the National Olympics Committee of Kenya in last week’s election for which he was equally grateful.
“This was made possible by the success of the Kenya Team and I express my gratitude to the entire volleyball fraternity.
