Nicholas Mbugua won his second title at the Scrabble Kenya tournament that came to an end today in Busia at Chefwest Hotel.
Mbugua, faced off with Ugandan internationals Philip Edwin Mugisha and Edgar Odongkara in the premier division.
He produced an imperious second day performance edging out day one leaders Mugisha and Odongkara.
Kenyans had to holding their breath as they watched Ugandans walking away with the title after taking an early lead.
But the Word Warrior proved superior to the Word Cranes this weekend.
With the top 2 players being absent, Mbugua was able to secure the second win in a row after winning 13 out of 18, with a cumulative spread of 1031.
Second place went to Odongkara who garnered 12 wins +936 with Mugisha closing the podium with 12 wins +909
In the Intermediate division, John Sang from Eldoret won gold with 14 points.
Willis Angawa and Eric Wamalwa won silver and bronze respectively. The two were recently selected to represent their counties in the recently concluded KICOSCA games.
The Open Division was very competitive with more than 5 schools represented. Linus Odour won first place with an impressive 12 wins +1107
Second place was taken by Marion Owour who also got 12 wins but had inferior spread +653.
Third place went to Largus Amukhanga who had led all of yesterday.
“This was a very good outing and we saw some very competitive play especially with our youth and we are confident that we shall place favorably in Malaysia. It’s also very good to see new faces on the podium” said Benard Amuke.
September holds 2 more major scrabble events, namely Inter-banks competition and the CASA games.
The next national tournament will be hosted in Nairobi on the 5th and 6th of October.
