Menengai Oilers win Kenya sevens overall title in Kakamega with KCB semis victory

Menengai Oilers are the winners of the Kenya Rugby Sevens Series following their victory against KCB in the semifinals of Kakamega Sevens, the last leg of the series at the Bull Ring in Kakamega County.

They finished the season with 113 points for their first-ever national sevens title and KCB finished second overall with 107 points after finishing third overall in Kakamega with a 21-14 win over Strathmore Leos.

Oilers, came from 12-0 in the second half to beat the bankers 12-17 at the final whistle to earn the overall title and at the same time qualifying into the main cup final where they play Kabras Sugar to, who came from 5-0 down to beat Strathmore leos 14-10.

Geoffrey Okwatch touched down first for KCB with Brian Wahinya adding the extras for a 7-0 lead. Okwatch went past the white wash for his brace with Wahinya missing the conversion for a 12-0 for the bankers into the break.

On resumption, it was an all Oilers game, taking to the bankers half Dennis Abukuse touched down for Oilers for a 12-5 after Geoffrey Ominde missed the conversion.

But Ominde rekindled the love for tries and he went past the whitewash to the second try that was converted by to level the score at 12-12.

Chrispina Shitundo’s unconverted try sealed the Oilers victory to earn the overall series title.

In the second semifinal, Kabras came from 5-0 down to beat Leo’s 14-10 to qualify for the finals against the Oilers.

Andrew Matoka scored the opening try for Leos with Branson Madigu missing to add the extras for a 0-5 lead into the break.

After a water break, Madigu failed to convert Festus Safari’s try for a 10-0 lead for the Leos but tables were overturned with Barry Robson converting Paul Abuto try for 10-07 and Robson converted Mathias Osimbo’s try for 14-10 win.

In the quarterfinals of the day, Oilers were 33-05 winners against Catholic Monks as KCB were 27-07 winners over Homeboyz.

In the third quarter, Leos beat Masinde Muliro University of Science and technology 14-07 and Kabras Sugar beat Nakuru RFC 22-19.
