Twenty three teams have so far registered for the third edition of Western Handball Extravaganza to be staged this Madaraka holiday at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) grounds.
According to secretary Kenya Handball Federation Western Branch Shioka Akaka, they are expecting over 30 teams to compete in the two day extravaganza.
“At close of business on Thursday, we had registered 23 teams, 15 men and 8 women ready to compete for the top prizes that include medals and certificates,” said Akaka.
The biggest western region tournament has attracted top teams from the regions where juniors have dominated the event.
“As we speak now, we have a mixture of juniors and senior players from various clubs and we expect a tough challenge,” said Akaka.
He said that preparations are quite on course and confirmations coming in thick and fast from all over the country.
“With the current order in the Ministry of Education, you either make a school team in second term or forget about achieving much in the schools competition,” said Akaka.
Among those teams registered include hosts MMUST for men and women as well as Kibabii University on Saturday and Sunday.
“Western kenya based universities have dominated the registration and we are expecting more learning institutions and individual clubs to compete, added Akaka.
