Former champions Joyce Nyaruai and Mehul Gohil reclaimed their Kenya National Chess Championships (KNCC) title that came to an end today at the Charter Hall, Nairobi.
In the Ladies Section, Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Nyaruai defeated former champion, and WCM Lucy Wanjiru for the title after garnering eight points to reclaim title she last won in 2017.
She defeated Glenda Madelta in round eight on yesterday followed by Madelta with 6.5 points while then defending champion Sasha Mongeli finished third with seven points.
With the victory, Nyaruai pocketed kshs 100,000.
Gohil, who won the Open title in 2014 and 2019 defeated the impressive Hugh Misiko in the final play-off – Armageddon after they drew 1-1 in both rapid and blitz play-offs
The two players had tied at the top on eight points after nine rounds to a brand new Mazda Demio car for the second time in three years.
He defeated then reigning champion Martin Njoroge (1973) in round nine to force play-offs.
