Obiri, Kibiwott claim KDF cross country titles

Reigning Olympic 5,000m silver medalist Hellen Obiri and upstart Kandie Kibiwott were crowned the champions of 2019 Kenya Defence Forces Athletics Kenya Cross Country championships held today at Kahawa Garrison.

Obiri, the reigning 5,000m Commonwealth Games champion won her 4th KDF cross country title in a row in 10km senior women ahead of national cross country cum national trials ahead of world cross country championships in Aarhus, Denmark.

The Africa champion clocked 32:19.5 ahead of Perin Nenkampi Irena Kamais and Deborah Samum. Kamais settled second in 33:01.6 followed by Samum.

Embakasi based Kibiwott won the men’s 10km race ahead of Lawi Kosgei (Moi Airbase) and Vedic Cheruiyot (Navy).

Tactical Kibiwott won the title 28:55.7 ahead of Kosgei’s in second in 29:01.4 with Cheruiyot settling third in 29:03.7.
