Oburu set record as Wanza, Chesang triumph at Combined championships

Belinda Oburu set the long standing shot putt record as Diana Wanza and Kevin Chesang won the 10,000m titles day two of Athletics Kenya combined World Relays and African Senior Athletics Championships Trials at Ulinzi Sports Complex today.
Oburu, hauled 15.74m to win the shot putt title to break the long-standing national record set by Elizabeth Olaba way back in 1987 when she managed to throw 15.60m.
With her efforts, Oburu earned herself a ticket for the Africa Athletics Championships set for Accra Ghana set for May 12–17 as she was joined by Sarah Okumu (15.46m) in the Accra journey with qualifying mark set at 14.90m. third placed Monica Njau with 13.06m missed the cut.
Caroline Cherotich threw 49.68m to win the discus title to make it to Accra after beating the qualifying mark of 49.0m.
On track, long distance runner Wanza won the women’s 10,000m in 32:12.1 to make the continental cut set at 35:20.0. she was joined by Mercy Chepng’eno, who clocked 32:27.2 for second and Phenah Yego in third at 32:47.4 to sail through to Accra just as ‎Sandrafelis Chebet (33:01.3) and Regina Wambui (33:23.6).
In men’s 10,000m, Chesang won the title in 28:38.52 ahead of Silas Senchura (28:39.16) and Mathew Kipkoech (28:47.56) who all made the Accra Cut.
