Omanyala, Chebet, Gathimba, Imali and Chepkoech shine at AK championships in Kasarani

Africa 100m record holder Ferdinand Omurwa Omanyala, world cross country junior champion Beatrice Chebet and double Africa 20km race walk champion Samuel Gathimba registered victroies in today’s final day of Athletics Kenya national championships cum trials for Senior Africa Athletics championships.

The Kenya’s number one sprinter won the title in 10.03 beating Ugandan Benson Okoth (10.52) and Denmark’s Tazana Kamanga for the podium in 10.62.

Maxmilah Imali from NPS set her new national record by winning 100m title in 11.35 ahead of Ugandan Jacinta Nyamahunga (11.57) and Monica Zafania (NPS) was third in 11.86.

Imali erased her own record she set at 11.77.

Chebet, the former World Under-20 5,000m champion Chebet won the 5,000m title in 15:30.20. representing National Police Service, Chebet beat compatriot Carolyne Nyaga (15:32.20) to second and Neptune Jepleting (KDF) came third timing 15:38.40.

Gathimba defeated world under 20 race walk champion Herristone Wanyonyi to second in 20km men’s walk in 1:23:18 and 1:24:44 respectively as Simon Wachira third in 1:26:59.

Competing senior ranks, reigning world under 20 3,000m steeplechase champion Jacklyine Chepkoech won the water and barriers race in 9:26.14 beating two time world under 20 champion Celliphine Chespol to second in 9:31.11 while Caren Chebet completed the podium in 9:31.60.
